Overview

Wave Energy Scotland (WES) has commissioned the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), through engagement with supply chain companies, to create a set of Wave Energy Converter (WEC) development guidance documents which draw upon the lessons learnt from real sea deployments of marine renewables at the Orkney-based test site.

Four guidance documents have been produced, covering Compliance, Handling, Installation, and Operations and Maintenance. These provide an insight into what technology developers should be considering at early stages of development, notably in areas of offshore operations, HSE, logistics, installation support, and regulatory compliance, and aim to aid WEC developers in making informed design decisions across a range of maturity levels and technology types.

Overview

March 2017

Overview of the approach followed to capture supply chain learning, and the capabilities of the participating organisations.

Compliance

March 2017

This guidance document focuses on the theme of Compliance, and covers issues pertaining to adherence of regulatory licencing, Health and Safety (H&S), electrical safety requirements and industry best practices.

Handling

March 2017

This guidance document highlights the issues to be considered under the theme of Handling. In this instance, handling is considered to mean any physical interaction; such as lifting, transporting or working on or around a marine energy device/subsystem or component, and can be defined in terms of mobilisation, demobilisation, onshore delivery and offshore delivery activities.

Installation

March 2017

This guidance document highlights the issues to be considered under the theme of Installation – specifically the impact that planning of resources such as vessels, people and the design have on the installation of the WEC, the moorings and/or foundations. Although the action of installation is specific to later stage developments, preparation and risk mitigation for open water installation will be covered within earlier activities.

Operations and Maintenance

March 2017

This guidance document focuses on the theme of Operations and Maintenance (O&M), and considers the management of both onshore and offshore marine operations that are part of the planned and unplanned test schedule after the initial installation of a device and moorings and/or foundation are complete.
