Structural Materials
This programme investigated if it is possible to make a step change impact in LCOE by constructing typical WEC devices from alternative materials to those traditionally used, such as steel.
Wave Energy Scotland Ltd
Wave Energy Scotland’s third call was for Engineering Design Studies into Structural Materials and Manufacturing Processes (SMMP), specifically focused on the construction of the WEC structure and prime mover, which investigate whether it is possible to make a step change impact in LCOE by constructing typical WEC devices from alternative materials.
Proposals were invited for Engineering Design Study relating to Hybrid Structures using rotational moulding of polymers, Elastomers, Concretes, and other alternative materials that could provide a step change in LCOE.
Hybrid Structures, Elastomers and Concretes were selected based on extensive industry research completed as part of earlier landscaping studies .
This package of documents covers the full set of requirements for Stage 1 of this 3-Stage programme, which aims to develop alternative materials for WEC technologies, and also includes slides for presentations given at the inception event, held in August 2016.
Please note; entries into the SMMP Programme are closed. Projects that were originally accepted into Stage 1 have progressed into future stages of the programme through closed competitions.
The documentation supplied covers the following:
SMMP - Stage 1 Competition Specification and Guidance outlines the competition, and provides guidance describing the requirements for a Stage 1 SMMP project, along with the competition objectives and expected outputs. General background on the economic challenges faced by the wave energy sector, target outcome metrics, suitable test facilities (as of June 2015) and device classifications is also provided.
Brokerage Event slides include information provided to prospective applicants at the brokerage event, held in Glasgow in 2016.
Please note that this call is CLOSED. Requirements for future calls on a similar topic will differ from the documents available here.
