Overview
The inaugural Wave Energy Scotland (WES) Annual Conference took place on Friday 2nd December in Edinburgh. The one day conference was designed to inform delegates about the progress of the WES programme since its establishment in 2014. There were 30 projects in progress at the time, with a focus on Power Take-Off (PTO) and Novel Wave Energy Converter (NWEC) programmes. The day gave delegates a chance to meet organisations involved in the WES programme and hear progress in the various projects.
The agenda for the day included:
- Overall WES Programme Summary (WES)
- Key-note presentation on Control for Wave Energy Converters (Ross Henderson, Quoceant)
- Details of up-coming call - Control Systems (WES)
- Update on Structural Materials and Manufacturing Processes call (WES)
- Power Take-Off project updates (Project Leads)
- NWEC project updates (Project Leads)
- NWEC Stage 2 competition details (WES)
- Wave Energy Technology Development presentation (Brian Holmes)
Presentations are available to download.
Main Presentation - WES Programme Update and New Calls
December 2016
This document contains the main presentation from this conference, describing the Wave Energy Scotland programme, objectives, upcoming innovation calls and funded technologies. Presentations given by contractors and invited guests are available separately.
Programme Participant 3-min Pitches
December 2016
During the conference, the lead contractor in each of the WES funded projects was invited to give a rapid-fire three-minute update on their technology development, highlighting possible areas of collaboration with others in the sector. The featured presenters were active in various stages of the Power Take Off, and Stage 1 of the Novel Wave Energy Converter call.
The document available to download here is a compilation of the slides from each of these presentations.
Wave Energy Control in Practice - Ross Henderson
December 2016
The slides here are from a presentation by Ross Henderson (Quoceant Ltd) discussing the subject of control of wave energy converters, drawing on content of the landscaping study carried out in 2016 lead by the Offshore Renewable energy Catapult. The report from this landscaping study is also available. The results of this landscaping study were used as additional information for the Control System Call released by WES in April 2017.
Ten Commandments Workshop - Brian Holmes
December 2016
Based on his extensive experience in the testing of wave energy converters, Brian Holmes gave an insight to the "dos" and "don'ts" of WEC design. The presentation was followed by an interactive session where the delegates were asked to give their perspectives on topics such as Energy Capture and Conversion, Reliability, Survivability, Scalability and Installability.
